Indiana’s lieutenant governor says his office is fielding calls nearly every day from constituents demanding action against Sharia law, calling the issue one that transcends party lines in a way few others do.
“This is an 80/20 issue, our offices have seen. It’s almost unlike any other issue,” Micah Beckwith told The Daily Signal. “I’ve gotten so much support, not just from Republicans, but also Democrats who see that the rise of Sharia is a problem.”
The Sharia-Free America Caucus, a congressional group dedicated to protecting the U.S. Constitution from the controversial Islamic legal system, is now turning its attention to state capitals across the country. The 120th Congress marks a new phase for the caucus as it seeks partnerships with state leaders to codify legislative efforts at the local level.
Beckwith declared himself “100 percent all in on this,” positioning Indiana as a potential partner in the national effort. The lieutenant governor framed the fight as one centered on protecting American women and religious minorities from a foreign legal system that enforces female genital mutilation and creates hostile conditions for non-Muslims.
“Islam is not just a religion; it is a political and military ideology,” Beckwith stated during his interview with the outlet.
The Indiana official warned that many Americans remain uninformed about what Sharia law actually entails and the threat it poses to constitutional governance. “Hoosiers are people who are normally reactive to things instead of being proactive,” he said. “But we don’t have the luxury of being reactive here. We have to understand the issue. Raising awareness will be important.”
Beckwith pointed to the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran as a cautionary tale, describing it as an example of “what the red-green alliance will look like.” He explained that Islamic revolutionary forces used socialist propaganda to gain public support before overthrowing the government, then turned against the very people who had supported them, particularly women.
He singled out Democrats aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America as potential obstacles, calling them “useful idiots for Sharia.”
“The only difference between Islam and the [Chinese Communist Party] is that Islam will hide behind a false religion to build a military ideology,” Beckwith said. “We saw it since Muhammad immigrated from Mecca to Medina; they immigrated, populated, and dominated.”
Despite potential political pushback, Beckwith expressed optimism that Indiana could follow Florida and Texas in taking a stand against Islamic law. “I see an appetite for it,” he concluded.
Indiana state Rep. Andrew Ireland has previously indicated his readiness to work with colleagues to advance the effort in the state legislature.
The push extends well beyond the Hoosier State. Minnesota state Sen. Michael Holmstrom has already unveiled a similar caucus in his state’s legislature. In Florida, Rep. Randy Fine, a member of the congressional Sharia-Free America Caucus, told the Daily Signal that his state could further strengthen its existing efforts.
The state-level expansion represents a significant shift in strategy for the caucus, which has previously focused its constitutional preservation efforts on Capitol Hill. By working directly with state officials, the group aims to create a patchwork of protections across the country that would stand regardless of federal action.
