The Supreme Court struck down a federal judge’s order that would have allowed Missouri to use a new Republican-favoring congressional map.
According to the unsigned order, the previous order is “stayed pending the disposition of the appeal in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and disposition of a petition for a writ of certiorari in this Court, if such a writ is timely sought. Should certiorari be denied, this stay shall terminate automatically. In the event certiorari is granted, the stay shall terminate upon the sending down of the judgment of this Court.”
Missouri lawmakers passed the congressional map in September. At the time, President Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Congratulations to Missouri’s incredible Republican State Legislators, who just overwhelmingly voted to pass their new, much fairer, and improved, Congressional Map,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on September 9. “It was my Great Honor to win Missouri six times, including Primaries, in 2016, 2020, and 2024 (Getting the Highest Number of Votes for any Office in the History of the State!), and this new Map will give the wonderful people of Missouri the opportunity to elect an additional MAGA Republican in the 2026 Midterm Elections.”
The Missouri Supreme Court recently ruled, “There is only one valid congressional redistricting in effect—the congressional redistricting the General Assembly established in 2022.”
“Regardless of any confusion, expense, or practical difficulties caused by the secretary’s delay and incorrect assumption about whether the referendum petition would be deemed sufficient, simply continuing to utilize the congressional redistricting in HB 1 does not comport with the Missouri Constitution because the 2022 map is the only map in effect,” the ruling said.
