New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a new fast-tracking of Housing Court cases addressing building management and landlords.
“I am proud to announce that the Unified Court System will now fast-track emergency housing court cases where the health, safety and well-being of New Yorkers is at risk,” Mamdani said during a news conference on the development. “This fast track will accelerate the cases that are both the most egregious and the most complex. Cases where at least one third of units in a building are subject to an open vacate order. Where families have been forced from their homes. Cases where at least one third of the units have an open and immediately hazardous violation for essential services.”
In a news release on the matter, Mamdani’s office quoted him as saying, “New Yorkers deserve a government that treats the housing crisis with the urgency it demands. When a building is dangerous, when an elevator is out or when a landlord has abandoned their responsibility to provide a safe home, tenants should not have to wait months or years for relief. This new fast track will help make sure our Housing Court moves with the same urgency as the emergencies New Yorkers are facing.” He described the effort as a “victory for tenants, legal services providers and everyone fighting for housing justice across our five boroughs.”
Earlier this year, Mamdani released a housing blueprint titled, “Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era,” which detailed new construction plans for affordable housing.
Through an executive order in January, Mamadani established a deputy mayor for housing to focus on “promote quality and affordable housing; safeguard tenants; support homeowners and foster the economic development or growth of the City.”
