Newsom Offers Rare Praise for Trump Policy

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) offered praise for one of President Trump’s policies, supporting his Trump Accounts.

“Every kid deserves a shot at a bright future — no matter how much money their family makes. That’s why we created CalKIDS: to put up to $1,500 in the hands of kids to help pay for college, career training or whatever comes next. One million kids have already claimed their accounts, but millions more still have money waiting for them,” Newsom declared. “We want every family to know: that money is yours — claim it, grow it, and put it to work for your child’s future. Together with Invest America and the launch of the California Golden Start Challenge, we’re giving our kids an even stronger opportunity to build the future they deserve.”

Speaking to ABC7, the governor said, “I’m enthusiastic about encouraging people to get a Trump Account. I think it’s incredibly important.” He acknowledged his frequent criticism of the Trump administration, adding, “I’m pretty aggressive pushing back against Trump, but not on this. This was one of the really outstanding things that this administration has done. And they deserve a lot of credit.”

President Trump officially launched Trump Accounts in July, ringing the opening bill. “If parents have not done so already, and they are doing so in record numbers, they should go right away to TrumpAccounts.gov and sign their child up for a free investment savings account,” Trump said during the event, adding that donors are putting “millions and millions of dollars into the accounts of poor children.”

The Trump Accounts app was launched on July 4 in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
