House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil sent a letter Monday to New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell demanding records on how more than 6,000 noncitizens ended up on the state’s voter rolls.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced last month that roughly 6,600 people who told the state Motor Vehicle Commission they were not citizens were nonetheless registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. Sherrill said about 400 of them cast ballots.
“During a July 21, 2026, press conference, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were registered to vote,” Jordan and Steil wrote in a letter obtained by Fox News, adding that the committees “write to express our serious concerns with New Jersey apparently adding thousands of noncitizens to its voter rolls.”
Sherrill has blamed a “serious software error” at the Motor Vehicle Commission for the mistake. IDEMIA, the vendor that supplied the software, has disputed that account and said state agencies were responsible. According to Jordan and Steil’s letter, IDEMIA told investigators the registrations continued until the MVC asked the company to change certain settings in June 2024, and that noncitizens were not removed from the rolls once the change was made.
“If the New Jersey government had access to accurate information about the citizenship status of the noncitizens who were registered to vote and were aware of the situation in June 2024, this raises additional questions about Governor Sherrill’s decision to blame IDEMIA, to not remove the noncitizens from the voter rolls, and to not disclose the issue to the public,” the letter said.
The committees are seeking documents tied to New Jersey’s compliance with the Help America Vote Act, the National Voter Registration Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1960, along with records on the state’s cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security’s push to verify voter citizenship. Reps. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., and Laurel Lee, R-Fla., also signed the letter. The committees want the records by Aug. 17.
The letter follows a separate Justice Department lawsuit, United States v. Caldwell, seeking an unredacted copy of New Jersey’s statewide voter file. A federal judge rejected that request last week. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin had earlier told New Jersey that a preliminary federal review flagged as many as 35,152 potential noncitizen registrations in the state, a far larger number than Sherrill has confirmed.
Sherrill has said she does not believe any election outcome was changed by the improper registrations and has ordered the flagged names removed from the rolls. She has also said she is replacing the vendor that ran the registration system and opened an internal investigation into how the error occurred.
The dispute comes as Republicans push the SAVE America Act, which would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote and impose nationwide voter ID rules. The bill has passed the House but has not received a Senate vote.
