President Trump unveiled a $22.5 billion plan to remodel the Washington Dulles International Airport. He has called the site “one of the worst airports anywhere in the world.”
“It’s considered one of the worst airports anywhere in the world, we’re going to make it maybe the best with some hard work,” Trump said. “This transformation is another step in our ongoing efforts to make Washington, D.C., safe and beautiful again.”
“It’s an impossible airport. You get off a bus and go into a train and from a train to another bus. It’s the worst airport,” Trump said from the Oval Office.
“President Trump’s work to make D.C. safe and beautiful has already reshaped our nation’s capital for the better. But to truly achieve this vision, we need to invest in an international gateway that is worthy of the greatest country on earth,” said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “By partnering with United Airlines and MWAA [Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority], we will create thousands of jobs” in what he called a “world-class airport filled with stunning architecture, efficient security screenings, hundreds of new flights, and improved mobility – all while preserving Dulles’ iconic primary terminal.”
“Say goodbye to those stale concourses, endless walkways, and those absurd mobile lounges, and say hello to a state-of-the-art facility that will inspire millions of flyers for generations to come,” he said.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby thanked the Trump administration for the plan and their “support as we move this transformative project forward and make Dulles a showcase for the nation’s capital, setting a new standard for airports across the country.”
