Outgoing Colombian President Gustavo Petro has filed a lawsuit demanding that the country’s election be annulled.
“Here is the nullity lawsuit regarding the 2026 presidential election,” Petro wrote on social media this week, sharing the filing. “Its technical language will be explained in videos that translate it into popular communication.”
“It is presented by the ‘digital witnesses,’ numbering 70,000 citizens, who managed to uncover in the traces left by the metadata of the documents uploaded to the internet by the electoral scrutiny software, the algorithmic manipulation of the real vote of the Colombian citizenry.”
The filing lists Colombia’s National Electoral Council (CNE), the National Civil Registry, President-elect de la Espriella, and Vice President-elect José Manuel Restrepo as defendants.
Petro has also been accused of staging a “coup de etat” to remain in power. The allegation was made by Colombia’s president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella.
“Democracy must be respected, and the will of the people must be defended,” de la Espriella said in a statement earlier this month.
“I want to address all Colombians to share my position regarding the situation our country is going through. I reiterate my commitment to the Constitution, the Rule of Law, and the mandate that millions of citizens expressed freely at the ballot box,” he said. “I call on the institutions, the Public Force, the international community, and all Colombians to remain steadfast in defending democracy and constitutional order. I also announce decisions related to the transition process, convinced that the will of the people must be respected without exception.”
De la Espriella is set to be sworn in on August 7.
