President Trump renewed his call for the United States to acquire Greenland during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“That’s what hurt my relationship with NATO, because Greenland doesn’t help Denmark. Denmark doesn’t spend money to really help Greenland, but it’s an important part for the United States, and it’s surrounded by China ships and Russian ships, and that’s not going to happen,” he told reporters. “That should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark.”
“They [Denmark] wouldn’t go along with it, and with all the money we spend to help them with Russia – we wouldn’t have to spend any money, we could remove all our soldiers out of Europe,” he warned, adding that Europe needs to be careful with its stances on immigration and energy.
Later, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen asserted that the U.S. would not acquire Greenland. “It is a well-known position of the United States that it wants to own and take over Greenland. I hope that it is equally well-known everywhere that this is not going to happen,” Frederiksen said, according to Reuters.
President Trump’s position on Greenland comes as U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry, who also serves as Louisiana’s governor, recently told Breitbart’s Alex Marlow that Trump still views Greenland as a priority.
Describing how the United States may acquire Greenland, Landry said, “I think we do it by actually sending more military personnel to Greenland to repopulating our bases, to creating a direct shipping route between the United States and Greenland, to getting direct airlines between the United States and Greenland, to open up more trade with the Greenlanders.”
