Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin suggested that cities refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities may lose access to international flights.
Speaking with Bret Baier, Mullin asked, “If they’re a sanctuary city, should they really be processing customs into their city?”
“If they’re a sanctuary city and they’re receiving international flights, and we’re asking them to partner with us at the airport, but once they walk out of the airport, they’re not going to enforce immigration policy—maybe we need to have a really hard look at that because we need to focus on cities that want to work with us,” Mullin said, explaining, “I’m saying we’re going to have to start prioritizing things at some point. Right now, remember, the Democrats are wanting to defund Customs and Border Patrol. Well, who processes those individuals when they walk off the plane?” Mullin asked. “So I’m going to have to be forced to make hard decisions. Who’s willing to work with us and partner with us? Once again, I’m not going outside the policies that Congress passed for me. And we’re not trying to push those.”
The Senate confirmed Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in a 54-45 vote last month. Two Democrats, Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman and New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich, joined Republicans in supporting Mullin’s nomination. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) voted against Mullin’s nomination.
Upon nominating Mullin, President Trump wrote on Truth Social that “current Secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida. I thank Kristi for her service at ‘Homeland.’”
