Iran Strikes Leave Cruise Passengers Stranded in the Middle East

A tense situation is unfolding in the Middle East as escalating military strikes involving Iran have stranded thousands of cruise passengers and disrupted travel across the region. Multiple cruise ships have halted operations while airlines struggle to move travelers out of affected areas.

Several vessels, including Celestyal Journey, Celestyal Discovery and MSC Euribia, have been forced to suspend activity after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran increased regional tensions. Cruise lines have been working to secure flights for passengers trying to return home, but widespread cancellations have complicated those efforts.

“MSC Cruises is working continuously with airline partners in the region, particularly Emirates and Etihad Airways, to identify and secure return flights for our guests,” the company said in a statement.

Air travel disruptions remain severe. According to travel data from TravelPirates, more than 12,000 flights across seven major Middle East airports were canceled on Tuesday alone. Cruise companies are now exploring additional options to move stranded travelers.

“In order to speed up the repatriation, we are working on other options such as chartering flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Muscat,” MSC Cruises said.

Security concerns continue to grow across the region. Dale Buckner, a retired U.S. Army colonel and CEO of the security firm Global Guardian, warned that ongoing attacks create serious risks for travelers.

“Right now, the biggest danger is direct fire or debris from Iranian missiles and drones. Iran has targeted the airports and prominent hotels,” Buckner said.

Cruise lines say they remain in close contact with authorities while passengers wait for safe travel options. “The situation on board remains calm. We are providing guests with regular updates on the situation,” MSC Cruises said.

Travelers caught in the disruption describe sudden chaos. Kristy Ellmer, visiting Dubai with her husband, recalled the moment tensions escalated.

“We were just sitting on the beach,” Ellmer said. “All of a sudden, we felt explosions.”

Ellmer eventually secured a flight out of Dubai after several cancellations, beginning her journey home through Munich.
