Military AI took a major step forward as the War Department announced a new partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into GenAI.mil, a platform used by U.S. military personnel. The move expands artificial intelligence tools across the force, making advanced language models available to roughly three million service members and civilian employees.
According to a War Department release, Military AI integration will allow ChatGPT to support “mission execution and readiness,” providing reliable generative AI capabilities to the joint force. The department said the initiative aligns with its stated goal of becoming an AI-first enterprise, with GenAI.mil serving as the backbone of that effort.
“ChatGPT will be made available to enhance mission execution and readiness, delivering reliable capabilities to the joint force,” the agency stated. Officials pointed to the platform’s “100% uptime since launch” and described it as a trusted system already improving operational speed and decision-making.
GenAI.mil launched publicly in December and is currently powered by Google Gemini. The Pentagon reported the platform surpassed one million unique users within two months. War Secretary Pete Hegseth said at the time, “The future of American warfare is here, and it’s spelled AI.”
The War Department confirmed personnel are now being trained to integrate AI tools into daily workflows. Leaders say the technology is already accelerating operations and strengthening decision superiority across warfighting, intelligence, and enterprise missions.
The initiative follows the department’s January rollout of its Artificial Intelligence Acceleration Strategy, which aims to remove bureaucratic obstacles and deploy frontier AI at speed. Undersecretary Emil Michael previously said, “Speed defines victory in the AI era.”
The Trump administration has made AI development a strategic priority as China and other adversaries rapidly expand their capabilities.
