Authorities in Arizona are investigating a possible abduction after the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie disappeared from her home north of Tucson. Investigators now say evidence points to a crime, intensifying concern as the search continues.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night around 9:30 p.m. at her residence near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Family members dropped her off at home earlier that evening when she failed to show up for church Sunday morning, a relative contacted authorities.
Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed investigators believe Guthrie was taken against her will. “At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will and that includes possible kidnapping or abduction,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson told Fox News Digital. Evidence also suggests she was harmed during the incident, though officials have not disclosed the extent of any injuries.
“I can’t think of the last time where, in the middle of the night in someone’s bed, an 84-year-old woman disappeared on us,” Nanos said in an interview with NBC Nightly News. He added that there have been no ransom demands.
After processing the home, investigators determined Guthrie did not leave voluntarily. “We believe now, after we processed that crime scene, that we do, in fact, have a crime scene,” Nanos said. “She did not leave on her own. We know that.”
Authorities also raised alarms about her health. Nanos said Guthrie has limited mobility and requires medication that could be fatal if not taken within 24 hours. “She could not walk out of that home 50 yards,” he told NBC News.
Savannah Guthrie released a statement through NBC thanking investigators and asking for help. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” she said.
