Hillary Clinton accuses supporters of President Trump of being involved in “moral rot” plaguing the nation. In an opinion piece for The Atlantic, Clinton writes that Trump supporters are engaged in “savagery,” describing it as a “feature, not a bug,” of the MAGA movement.
Discussing what she perceives to be “moral rot,” Clinton writes, “Whatever you think about immigration policy, how can a person of conscience justify the lack of compassion and empathy for the victims in Minnesota, and for the families torn apart or hiding in fear, for the children separated from their parents or afraid to go to school?”
Clinton goes on to claim that Trump supporters’ “twisted campaign” threatens to “pave the way for an extreme vision of Christian nationalism that seeks to replace democracy with theocracy in America.” She argues that the “rejection of bedrock Christian values such as dignity, mercy, and compassion did not start with the crisis in Minnesota,” but was “set right at the beginning of this second Trump presidency.”
She declares that what she believes to be “moral blindness” or “moral bankruptcy” is “certainly not what I was taught in Sunday school, not what my reading of the Bible teaches me, and not what I believe Jesus preached in his short time on Earth.”
“MAGA rejects the teachings of Jesus to ‘love thy neighbor’ and care for ‘the last, the least, and the lost.’ It recognizes only a zero-sum war of all against all,” Clinton notes, going on to again condemn “Christian nationalism.”
Urging Americans to confront “MAGA morality,” Clinton states that one must “follow the example of courageous faith leaders standing up to the Trump administration’s abuses,” listing instances of deportation protests as examples. “I hope grassroots faith leaders across the country who are appalled by what they see from an immoral administration and an extremist political right also find their voice,” she adds.
Clinton’s opinion piece echoes similar comments made last year. In an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the former Secretary of State said, “The idea that you could turn the clock back and try to recreate a world that never was, dominated by, you know, let’s say it, white men, of a certain persuasion, a certain religion, a certain point of view, a certain ideology, is just doing such damage to what we should be aiming for.”
Clinton has also called for a “formal deprogramming” of Trump supporters.
