Several Democrats have called for President Trump’s removal from office under the 25th Amendment, with one representative calling him “mentally ill.”
Sharing a reported letter from President Trump to Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Democratic Representative Yassamin Ansari (AZ) wrote on social media, “The president of the United States is extremely mentally ill and it’s putting all of our lives at risk. The 25th Amendment exists for a reason — we need to invoke it immediately.”
President Trump’s letter read: “Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.”
The letter went on to declare that Denmark cannot protect Greenland from Russia or China.
Store later said in a statement that the Nobel Peace Prize is “awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government.” He confirmed that the message “came in response to a short text message from me to President Trump sent earlier on the same day, on behalf of myself and the President of Finland Alexander Stubb.”
Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) also called for President Trump’s removal from office over the same exchange. Sharing a headline of a New York Times article on the subject of President Trump and Greenland, Markey wrote, “Invoke the 25th Amendment.”
Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) shared the same headline and similarly wrote, “Donald Trump is unfit to lead and clearly out of control. Invoke the 25th Amendment.”
