A Burlington department store in Wilmington, Delaware, witnessed a wave of holiday magic this week thanks to a mysterious donor who paid off approximately $8,000 in layaway balances, touching the lives of local families and store employees alike.
Store manager Devin Riley shared the heartwarming news with 6 Action News, saying, “It was joyful to call the customers. Some of them cried. Some were shocked that this happened.” The generous payment covered kids’ toys, Christmas gifts, and even purchases made by employees.
Riley added, “A lot of people are going through hard times, and even the ones who weren’t were just grateful for the gesture that this person provided.” He noted that in his time at the store, he’d never seen anything like it. The unexpected generosity came just days before Christmas, offering relief and surprise to many who may have been struggling to fulfill their holiday plans.
Customers called the gesture miraculous, with Wilmington resident Tamar Pates saying, “I am happy that people are still caring and loving in this generation. Once in a while, you want to know, ‘Do people still care?’ And I’m so moved that there are still people out there that care.”
Though the donor asked to remain anonymous, they shared one wish: that their good deed might inspire others to practice kindness and generosity — not just during the holiday season, but year-round.
The story of the anonymous benefactor has quickly spread, lifting spirits and reminding the community that small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of hope and joy, especially when it’s needed most.
