House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has called for the Department of Justice to prosecute one of former special counsel Jack Smith’s attorneys.
Thomas Windom refused to answer nearly every one of the Committee’s questions. The questions involved topics such as materials from the January 6 Select Committee, a proposal to investigate President Trump, the surveillance of Rep. Scott Perry, information regarding the investigations of other Members of Congress, and FBI communications.
“Windom’s improper refusal to answer nearly all questions during his deposition obstructed the Committee’s fact-finding,” Jordan wrote in his letter. “As a senior assistant to Special Counsel Jack Smith, Windom possesses unique, firsthand information about the work of that Office. Yet, despite being given express authorization by DOJ on two separate occasions, Windom declined to answer questions during his deposition about topics necessary and relevant to the Committee’s inquiry.”
“Although DOJ had specifically authorized Windom to testify without significant restrictions about his role as a prosecutor on Jack Smith’s team, he flouted the Committee’s constitutional oversight authority and its deposition rules by not answering most of the Committee’s questions,” the letter adds. “Windom’s insistence on refusing to answer the Committee’s important questions about his work deprives the Committee and Congress of necessary firsthand information about the operations of the Office of Special Counsel Jack Smith.”
Jordan’s letter is the latest call for investigations into those close to Smith. Earlier this month, the chairman sent a letter to acting DOJ Inspector General Don Richard Berthiaume Jr., seeking communications as to the OIG’s involvement in the 2022 seizure of Rep Perry’s phone.
In October, Jordan demanded that Smith testify on the weaponized Department of Justice under the Biden administration.
