Google has announced a $40 billion investment in new data centers across rural Texas, launching one of its largest infrastructure projects to date. The expansion will support the tech giant’s artificial intelligence ambitions while reshaping local economies in Armstrong and Haskell counties.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed that this is Google’s single largest investment in any state. The company will build facilities near the city of Abilene and in Armstrong County, with full deployment projected by 2027. The move is part of a growing AI infrastructure race among major tech firms like Microsoft and Meta.
Beyond construction, the initiative includes workforce training in electrical trades, college internships, and energy efficiency efforts. Google will also partner with local organizations to provide digital skills education, targeting underserved communities and youth programs.
