Planned Parenthood officially shut down its last two clinics in Louisiana. The state now joins Wyoming, North Dakota, and Mississippi as being Planned Parenthood-free.
“Today, is Planned Parenthood’s last day of business in the State of Louisiana. This is a win for babies, a win for mothers, and a win for LIFE!” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry (R) wrote on X on Tuesday.
Upon announcing the site closures in August, Planned Parenthood said in a statement, “This is not a decision we wanted to make; it is one we were forced into by political warfare. Anti-reproductive health lawmakers obsessed with power and control have spent decades fighting the concept that people deserve to control their own bodies. These extremists have done everything they can to ‘defund’ Planned Parenthood, dismantle public health infrastructure, and block patients from the care they rely on.”
The abortion provider closed five clinics in California in July as a result of policies included in the One Big Beautiful Bill. The clinics, located in Gilroy, Santa Cruz, Madera, San Mateo, and South San Francisco, closed as the legislation prohibits Medicaid funding for health centers that both provide abortions and received more than $800,000 in federal reimbursements the previous year.
The bill stipulates that any nonprofit organization primarily engaged in family planning services, reproductive health, and related medical care, which provides abortions and received over $1 million in Medicaid funding in 2024, will be ineligible for federal funds for a decade.
President Donald Trump moved in January to enforce the Hyde Amendment, which aims to “protect taxpayers from being forced to pay for abortion,” his executive order explains.
