The Washington Post collapse continues to unfold as its former fact-checker Glenn Kessler paints a grim picture of chaos and leadership failure under billionaire owner Jeff Bezos. Once hailed as the savior of the struggling paper, Bezos now faces accusations of neglect. Kessler told Fox News Digital, “He has to be committed to it. If he’s not committed to it, he should find someone else to own it.”
Kessler, who left the Post in July after 27 years, compared the paper to “being on the Titanic after it struck an iceberg — drifting aimlessly as it sank, with not enough lifeboats for everyone.” The Post, once a powerhouse of American journalism, reportedly lost $77 million in 2024 alone, forcing buyouts that pushed out veteran staff.
Bezos initially poured resources into the Post after purchasing it in 2013, doubling its staff and boosting foreign coverage. But after traffic surged during Trump’s presidency, the paper “kind of lost our way… and started losing oodles of money,” Kessler admitted. While Bezos recently pushed the editorial board to embrace “personal liberties and free markets,” his absence in daily leadership has angered both readers and staff.
“The Post needs to be prepared for that,” Kessler warned about the shifting media landscape. “And I kind of feel like they’ve lost a lot of, you know, important sailors and captains to keep the ship going.”
