FDA’s Vaccine Regulator Returns After Sudden Resignation

Dr. Vinay Prasad has been reinstated as director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research just over a week after stepping down. His brief departure followed mounting political pressure, but agency leaders have now brought him back, underscoring deep tensions within the FDA today.

Dr. Prasad resigned at the end of July after facing backlash from conservative figures—including activist Laura Loomer—and castigation focused on his past comments and policy decisions. His controversial role in restricting COVID‑19 vaccine approvals and questioning gene therapy safety drew ire from both political operatives and pharmaceutical industry interests. Despite this, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary praised his scientific acumen, denying that the resignation was forced, and worked behind the scenes to facilitate his return. “The idea that he was pushed out by anybody is simply untrue,” Makary stated, suggesting public headlines prompted Prasad’s temporary withdrawal.

Sources confirm the FDA, at Makary’s urging and with support from HHS, invited Prasad back, prioritizing the agency’s mission over external distractions. The White House and HHS ultimately allowed the reinstatement, framing it as a strategic decision in the face of media noise.
