U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon is launching a nationwide tour next week to promote the Trump administration’s push to return control of education to the states. The “Returning Education to the States” Tour will take McMahon to all 50 states over the next year, where she will spotlight local-led initiatives, promote school choice, and advance the administration’s goal of dismantling federal overreach in education.
In a video message shared exclusively with Breitbart News, McMahon emphasized her mission to reduce Washington’s control. “Education isn’t decided in Washington, D.C.,” she said. “It is shaped in our schools, our neighborhoods, and by the people who know our children best.” The tour aims to bring education policy back into the hands of parents, educators, and local communities.
McMahon’s first stops will be in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee. While specific school visits have not yet been disclosed, the Secretary said she is looking forward to meeting with students, teachers, and community leaders to hear how local solutions are driving educational success. She also plans to highlight the role of school choice and community-led programs in improving outcomes.
President Donald Trump has long made education reform a central goal. He has openly called for abolishing the Department of Education and returning power to the states. In April, Senate Republicans introduced legislation to eliminate the department entirely, aligning with Trump’s executive order. While the department’s formal closure would require congressional action, McMahon has already begun shifting functions elsewhere—including student loans to the Treasury Department.
McMahon’s efforts have already gained traction. The Department of Education received Supreme Court approval in July to reduce its workforce by nearly 50 percent, a move seen as a step toward Trump’s broader plan to decentralize education. The department has also supported the school choice tax credit program passed in Trump’s legislative package, dubbed the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
The tour underscores the administration’s continued push to empower parents and local communities, limit federal interference, and give every student access to a high-quality education tailored to their needs.
