Titanic Greenland Iceberg Threatens Homes—Residents Brace for Impact

A massive iceberg is drifting ominously close to the shores of Innaarsuit, Greenland, and residents are holding their breath. Officials warned that if the Greenland iceberg strikes or shatters nearby, debris could trigger massive waves capable of washing away low-lying homes.

Authorities issued urgent precautions: “Emergency services encourage families not to go in a group towards the store,” and urged people with walking difficulties to exercise extra care. For a week, the iceberg has remained unnervingly stationary—unusual behavior that prompted the municipality to temporarily close the local fish factory and small grocery store, said local worker Dennis Lehtonen: “Because of this, the [local municipality] issued the official warning for the iceberg and we are temporarily closing the local fish factory where I work as well as the small shop.”

While many residents remain alarmed, others saw a rare spectacle. “I have asked the locals about their feelings for the iceberg. Some say they’re worried, but there are plenty of people who are sort of excited (like me),” Lehtonen added.

This isn’t Innaarsuit’s first brush with danger. In 2018, an 11‑ton iceberg drifted into the harbor, prompting evacuations. That iceberg eventually drifted away after several days of strong winds.
