Carnival Cruise Line is facing heated criticism after unveiling a series of new guest policies, triggering a wave of backlash across social media. Critics allege that the cruise line’s efforts to curb disruptive behavior are racially motivated, while Carnival insists the rules are about safety, comfort, and common sense.
Among the updates is a reinforced marijuana policy that Carnival says is non-negotiable. “Marijuana, including cannabis and its derivatives, and other illegal substances, are unlawful and strictly prohibited on board,” the cruise line stated. Despite growing legalization in some U.S. states, Carnival made it clear that federal law still applies at sea. Violators face immediate removal from the ship and possible legal action.
Carnival’s stricter stance also bans portable speakers without headphones, limits guests to 15 alcoholic drinks per 24-hour period, and prohibits unsupervised minors in public areas after 1 a.m. The cruise line also outlawed handheld fans used in viral dance trends due to the loud “clack” noise that can disrupt fellow passengers.
Some social media users responded with outrage. One TikTok creator claimed, “Carnival does not like colored people,” while another called it “the Section 8 of the Sea.” Unconfirmed rumors even suggested a rap music ban—something Carnival firmly denies. “Our DJs play a wide variety of music, including hip-hop,” a spokesperson clarified.
Carnival’s defenders, however, applauded the crackdown. “Y’all have to learn how to act… y’all really made the value go down,” one user posted. Another said, “It’s not racism, but certain stuff becomes a liability after a while.”
Despite the backlash, the cruise line appears committed to creating a more controlled, respectful, and drug-free environment at sea.
