President Donald Trump announced that the United States and China have reached a trade deal that now awaits final approval from him and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“OUR DEAL WITH CHINA IS DONE, SUBJECT TO FINAL APPROVAL WITH PRESIDENT XI AND ME. FULL MAGNETS, AND ANY NECESSARY RARE EARTHS, WILL BE SUPPLIED, UP FRONT, BY CHINA. LIKEWISE, WE WILL PROVIDE TO CHINA WHAT WAS AGREED TO, INCLUDING CHINESE STUDENTS USING OUR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD WITH ME!),” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “WE ARE GETTING A TOTAL OF 55% TARIFFS, CHINA IS GETTING 10%. RELATIONSHIP IS EXCELLENT! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!”
The statement follows U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saying this week, “We have reached a framework to implement the Geneva consensus and the call between the two presidents.”
The ability for Chinese students to use U.S. collegiate facilities comes as a Chinese national from Wuhan was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport while attempting to smuggle biological materials into a University of Michigan lab.
President Trump has also signed a proclamation restricting Harvard University’s enrollment of foreign students. “When a university refuses to uphold its legal obligations, including its recordkeeping and reporting obligations, the consequences ripple far beyond the campus. They jeopardize the integrity of the entire United States student and exchange visitor visa system, compromise national security, and embolden other institutions to similarly disregard the rule of law,” the proclamation reads.
Similarly, the State Department announced last month that it was working with the Department of Homeland Security to “aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.”
