Ohio State University will require all undergraduates—starting with the class of 2029—to complete AI fluency training beginning this fall. The initiative includes a new course, “Unlocking Generative AI,” alongside workshops and curriculum-wide integration of AI tools. University leaders say the move ensures students are equipped for a workforce increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
President Ted Carter and Provost Ravi Bellamkonda stressed the program’s goal of preparing students to use AI ethically and responsibly, without replacing critical thinking. Faculty are encouraged to incorporate AI into instruction, while maintaining academic integrity standards. The initiative also supports faculty through professional development and course redesign funding.
Philosophy Professor Steven Brown said banning AI would leave students unprepared. Instead, Ohio State’s approach promotes thoughtful engagement, reinforcing the role of education in navigating new technologies. The effort reflects principles of stewardship and wisdom, training students to lead in a world shaped by innovation.
