President Trump’s administration is celebrating a significant decrease in national murder rates, highlighting what it calls a return to law and order. The White House credits tougher crime policies and robust support for law enforcement for this achievement.
According to FBI and Real-Time Crime Index data, U.S. murder rates dropped from 6.83 per 100,000 in 2020 to 5.75 in 2023. Preliminary figures for 2024 show a further decline to 4.97, marking the lowest per-capita homicide level since FBI reporting began.
Major cities across the country are also reporting sharp improvements. New York saw a 34.1% decrease, Chicago 23%, Baltimore 24%, Philadelphia 14.7%, and New Orleans 25% year-over-year, illustrating a broad-based trend.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized President Trump’s agenda of standing firmly with law enforcement, deporting violent illegal immigrants, and ensuring violent offenders are held accountable. FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson echoed this stance, stating federal agents are receiving the tools and support necessary to “crush violent crime” and keep communities safe.
Independent analyst Jeff Asher called the expected 2025 rate “the lowest U.S. murder rate ever recorded,” as the current downward trajectory continues.
