The bill narrowly passed the House with a 215-214 vote, marking a significant victory for the GOP leadership.
The legislation includes provisions to make permanent several tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, introduces new deductions for tips and overtime, and allocates $350 billion for national defense and border security. It also implements reforms to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), aiming to reduce federal spending. Additionally, the bill raises the debt ceiling by $4 trillion to prevent a potential default.
Despite internal GOP disagreements and unanimous Democratic opposition, Johnson managed to unify his party to secure the bill’s passage. President Trump praised Johnson’s efforts, stating, “Great job by Speaker Mike Johnson, and the House Leadership, and thank you to every Republican who voted YES on this Historic Bill!”
Conservative commentators have echoed this sentiment. National Review’s Rich Lowry noted that Johnson has “proven quite an adept speaker,” while Fox News contributor Joe Concha referred to him as the “MVP for Trump right now.”
