A conservative group is urging Louisiana Republicans to protect school choice funding as proposed cuts threaten thousands of scholarships for low-income families. The Club for Growth launched a campaign opposing a $44 million reduction to the Louisiana Giving All True Opportunity to Rise (LA GATOR) program. These cuts are being considered by the GOP-led State Senate to fund $2,000 stipends for public school teachers.
The group’s advertisement warns that the proposed budget change could eliminate up to 6,000 scholarships. In contrast, the Louisiana House passed a budget that includes over $90 million for LA GATOR, aligning with Governor Jeff Landry’s request. The state’s Department of Education confirms 35,000 out of 40,000 applicants for the upcoming school year qualify for aid, with final awards depending on the approved budget.
Priority for scholarships goes to students already enrolled, those with disabilities, low-income families, and siblings of current recipients. Award amounts range from $5,243 to $15,253 depending on eligibility. The Club for Growth has supported similar school choice efforts in states like Tennessee and Indiana, and began a six-figure campaign in April featuring Governor Landry promoting the program.
President Donald Trump continues to advocate for school choice as a core education policy, calling for the return of control to the states and the dismantling of the Department of Education.
