President Donald Trump condemned Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) following her federal assault charges stemming from a confrontation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at Newark’s Delaney Hall detention facility. Trump slammed McIver as “out of control” and praised the Justice Department’s actions, declaring, “The days of that crap are OVER in this country. We’re gonna have law and order.”
The incident occurred on May 9, when McIver, alongside Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, attempted an oversight visit to Delaney Hall. Tensions escalated as ICE agents arrested Baraka. Prosecutors allege McIver physically assaulted federal officers during the altercation. Bodycam footage reportedly shows McIver elbowing and pushing agents.
McIver denies the allegations, asserting she was conducting legitimate congressional oversight. She stated, “I did not body slam anyone,” and accused ICE of creating the confrontation.
Interim U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, appointed under the Trump administration, filed two felony counts against McIver for assaulting and impeding federal officers. Habba emphasized that efforts to resolve the matter without formal charges failed.
