Trump Awards First-Ever ‘Medals of Sacrifice’ to Families of Fallen Officers

President Donald Trump presented the inaugural “Medals of Sacrifice” to the families of three Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies killed in the line of duty. The ceremony took place in the Oval Office on May 19, 2025.

The honorees—Cpl. Luis Paez Jr., Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller Jr., and Deputy Sheriff Ignacio Dan Diaz—were fatally struck by an SUV on November 21, 2024, while assisting with a disabled patrol motorcycle on the roadside. The driver attempted to pass another vehicle, overcorrected, and collided with the deputies. A fourth officer witnessed the incident.

Cpl. Paez, 58, served for 36 years and was known as a devoted family man. Deputy Diaz, 51, had 20 years of service and was recognized for his dedication and compassion. Deputy Waller, 54, served 18 years and was remembered for his charisma and dedication.

President Trump emphasized the nation’s gratitude, stating, “We’ll never forget their legacy, and we’ll never forget the debt we owe all of these great law enforcement heroes.” He acknowledged the tragedy’s impact on the Palm Beach community and the nation.

The “Medal of Sacrifice” honors law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty, highlighting their bravery and dedication to public safety. This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to supporting law enforcement and their families.
