GOP Pushes Ahead After Budget Committee Setback on Trump’s ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’

House Speaker Mike Johnson remains committed to advancing President Donald Trump‘s comprehensive legislative package, known as the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” despite its recent blockage in the House Budget Committee. The bill, which encompasses significant tax reforms, spending cuts, and policy overhauls, faced opposition from five Republican members who joined Democrats in a 16-21 vote against it.

The proposed legislation includes key provisions such as extending the 2017 tax cuts, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay, increasing deductions for seniors, and implementing new work requirements for Medicaid recipients. It also features measures to enhance border security and reform energy policies. These sweeping proposals aim to align with conservative economic and social priorities.

Opposition from within the Republican ranks has focused on specific aspects of the bill. Fiscal conservatives such as Reps. Chip Roy of Texas and Ralph Norman of South Carolina voiced concerns over the delayed start of the Medicaid work requirements, currently set for 2029. They advocate for an earlier implementation timeline. Additionally, objections were raised regarding the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions, with some representatives from high-tax states urging an increase in the deduction cap.

Speaker Johnson has stated that efforts are underway to reconcile these internal disagreements. He affirmed that the Budget Committee is expected to revisit the bill shortly and that leadership is targeting a vote in the full House by the end of the week. Johnson has engaged with dissenting members, emphasizing flexibility in policy adjustments such as staggered implementation of Medicaid work rules to accommodate state capabilities.

The legislative push also holds significant weight due to the looming debt ceiling deadline. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that action must be taken before July 4th to avoid fiscal disruption. GOP leadership remains focused on securing enough support to move the bill forward while maintaining alignment with conservative fiscal responsibility and President Trump’s policy objectives.
