A former FBI analyst, John Sullivan, has announced his candidacy for New York’s 17th Congressional District, challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Lawler. Sullivan resigned from the FBI in April 2025, citing opposition to President Donald Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel as his reasons for departure.
Sullivan, who served 17 years in the FBI, expressed concerns over the direction of the bureau under the Trump administration. He criticized President Trump and Director Patel, stating they pose threats to “American safety and security.” Sullivan also condemned the pardoning of individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol incident, labeling them as “violent insurrectionists” and expressing fears about potential threats to FBI employees.
In his campaign announcement, Sullivan described himself as a “dad, a husband, a public servant, and a cancer survivor.” He emphasized his background in national security and his commitment to public service.
Rep. Mike Lawler, the current representative for New York’s 17th District, has been identified by Democrats as a vulnerable Republican in the upcoming 2026 elections. Lawler has not yet announced whether he will seek re-election or pursue a gubernatorial bid. He has expressed intentions to make a decision by June 2025.
Lawler has faced criticism from constituents during recent town hall meetings, with attendees questioning his support for President Trump’s policies and his stance on federal spending cuts. Despite the challenges, Lawler maintains that he has effectively represented his district, highlighting his bipartisan efforts and legislative achievements.
Sullivan’s entry into the race adds a new dynamic to the political landscape of New York’s 17th District, setting the stage for a potentially contentious election cycle.
