Illegal Migrant Accused of Stealing Kristi Noem’s Bag in DC Arrested

The suspect accused of stealing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s luxury Gucci bag in Washington, D.C., has been identified as Mario Bustamante-Leiva, a Chilean illegal migrant. Authorities confirmed that Bustamante-Leiva was detained after allegedly snatching the bag while Noem celebrated Easter Sunday with her family at The Capital Burger.

The stolen bag reportedly contained about $3,000 in cash, Noem’s driver’s license, passport, DHS badge, apartment keys, and personal belongings. Law enforcement revealed that Bustamante-Leiva is a member of a larger East Coast robbery network targeting affluent individuals. Authorities are still searching for an accomplice, another illegal migrant.

Interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin stated that Noem was not targeted because of her high-profile role, but rather because the criminals were attracted to the expensive handbag. Bustamante-Leiva has a long criminal history, including a 2015 theft spree in London where he stole approximately $28,000 worth of goods.

Video surveillance shows the suspect scouting the room, hooking Noem’s bag with his foot, covering it with a jacket, and swiftly leaving the restaurant. In a statement, Noem thanked the Secret Service and ICE for swiftly apprehending the suspect and reaffirmed her commitment to public safety alongside President Donald Trump.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has confirmed involvement in the case, ensuring Bustamante-Leiva and his accomplice will face deportation proceedings.
