Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that he is running against Senator John Cornyn (R) for his U.S. Senate seat, aiming to “take a sledgehammer to the D.C. establishment.”
“Together, let’s send John Cornyn packing,” he wrote on X.
Speaking to Laura Ingraham, Paxton said, “We have another great U.S. senator, Ted Cruz, and it’s time we have another great senator that will actually stand up and fight for Republican values, fight for the values of the people of Texas, and also support Donald Trump in the areas that he’s focused on in a very significant way. And that’s what I plan on doing.”
Cornyn’s campaign team called Paxton a “fraud,” noting that “this will be a spirited campaign and we assure Texans they will have a real choice when this race is over.”
Paxton’s campaign website describes him as a “fearless conservative, a relentless fighter, and a true defender of Texas values.”
“As Texas’ 51st Attorney General, Ken Paxton has been on the front lines of the most important legal fights in the country. He’s sued the Biden administration over 100 times, standing up against open borders policies, government overreach, attacks on the Second Amendment, and the far-left’s radical agenda,” the site says. “His legal victories were so significant that even CNN had to admit defeat, calling Texas ‘a legal graveyard for Biden policies.'”
In 2023, the Texas House of Representatives impeached Paxton over charges of abuse of public trust and disregard of official duties. He was acquitted in his Senate impeachment trial.
“The sham impeachment coordinated by the Biden Administration with liberal House Speaker Dade Phelan and his kangaroo court has cost taxpayers millions of dollars, disrupted the work of the Office of Attorney General and left a dark and permanent stain on the Texas House,” Paxton said at the time. “The weaponization of the impeachment process to settle political differences is not only wrong, it is immoral and corrupt.”
