DeSantis Calls Special Session to Support Trump Policies

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) called for a special legislative session to require local governments in the state to enforce incoming President Donald Trump’s deportation goals.

“We are going to need legislation to impose additional duties and provide funding for those local officials,” DeSantis said. “There also needs to be measures to hold people accountable who are violating our anti-sanctuary policies.”

“And Florida needs to make sure that we do not have any lingering incentives for people to come into our state illegally,” he continued. “So, therefore, I’m going to call the legislature into special session starting the week of Jan. 27. We have the next president taking office January 20th, and we anticipate executive orders to be issued immediately after the swearing-in and the inaugural address.”

“We need to act, and we need to act quickly,” DeSantis added. “We don’t have time to waste. The American people spoke very clearly. Of all the issues out there, and there were a lot of very important issues, this issue of the border and illegal immigration was one of the top issues in the 2024 election.”

DeSantis’ call for a special session stands in contrast to that of California Governor Gavin Newsom (D), who aims to “Trump-proof” the state. The state reached a $50 million agreement, of which $25 million will support services for residents who may be deported. The other $25 million will be allocated to the state’s Department of Justice.

A November proclamation described Newsom’s intention to “safeguard California values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration,” his office said.
