California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized President-elect Donald Trump during an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, accusing him of politicizing Southern California wildfires and threatening aid to first responders. Newsom’s remarks follow Trump’s recent criticism of the governor’s handling of the crisis.
When asked about Trump’s comments, Newsom extended an invitation for Trump to visit the state and witness the situation firsthand. “We want to do it in the spirit of an open hand, not a closed fist,” Newsom said, adding that he respects the office of the presidency but questioned Trump’s understanding of California’s water policies.
Newsom rebutted Trump’s claims about mismanagement involving the Delta smelt and reservoirs, stating that California’s reservoirs are full and the connection to wildfires is baseless. He labeled Trump’s remarks as “misinformation” that fails to aid the ongoing firefighting and recovery efforts.
The governor also accused Trump of withholding disaster aid to California in the past, citing similar actions in Utah, Michigan, Puerto Rico, and Georgia. Newsom alleged that Trump’s threats were politically motivated, referencing a 2018 instance when Trump delayed aid to California until learning of support from Orange County voters.
Trump’s campaign rhetoric, including statements about withholding fire-related emergency support unless California aligns with his policies, was characterized by Newsom as “threatening” to first responders. Newsom emphasized the importance of federal support in managing the state’s emergency response and recovery operations.
As Southern California battles ongoing wildfires, the governor urged a focus on collaboration rather than divisive rhetoric, highlighting the critical role of federal aid in ensuring the safety of first responders and affected communities.
