Samaritan’s Purse, the Christian relief organization led by Rev. Franklin Graham, is gearing up to send volunteers to assist those devastated by the wildfires raging across Los Angeles County. However, as Graham told Newsmax, the group must wait until the fires are fully contained and first responders have completed their critical work.
“Right now, we just have to wait until the fires are contained and out before we can do anything,” said Graham, who also heads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Once authorities give the all-clear, Samaritan’s Purse will mobilize its volunteers to provide support and recovery assistance.
The organization’s first priority is to assist homeowners in recovering any valuables that may have survived the fire. Volunteers carefully sift through ashes in search of items like wedding rings, jewelry, coins, or photo albums—objects that hold deep personal significance.
“To be able to give something back to a homeowner — even a small thing like a ring that survived — means so much to them,” said Graham. Samaritan’s Purse may also assist with property cleanup and preparation for rebuilding, provided the government permits such efforts.
The needs of displaced families are significant, as many evacuees face challenges securing essentials. Even families who find temporary housing often struggle with a lack of basic furniture and resources.
“It’s a tough deal for them,” Graham said. “A lot of these people are in evacuation centers, but they’re not going to make it without help.”
In addition to physical assistance, the organization’s chaplains will be on-site to provide emotional and spiritual care to affected families. The chaplains, trained for crisis ministry, will listen, pray, and encourage survivors, reminding them of God’s love during this challenging time.
“This is the most traumatic event in their lives,” Graham said. “They want to tell their story, and the chaplains will just listen and pray with them, offering support emotionally and spiritually.”
Samaritan’s Purse is no stranger to crisis relief. The organization has been active in wildfire recovery efforts, including in Lahaina, Hawaii, where fires devastated thousands of lives. Graham noted that the rebuilding process in Hawaii was slow, but Samaritan’s Purse is now actively helping families rebuild their homes.
“We’re in there doing rebuilds right now, and it’s just incredible,” said Graham.
As the California wildfires continue to wreak havoc, Samaritan’s Purse stands ready to offer hope, assistance, and the love of Christ to those who have lost so much. Donations are being accepted to support their ongoing ministry work.
