Arrest Made After Rep. Nancy Mace Attacked by Alleged LGBTQ Activist at U.S. Capitol

A suspect has been arrested following an alleged assault on Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday evening. Mace identified her assailant as a pro-LGBTQ activist and vowed to stand firm despite the incident.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mace described the encounter:

“I was physically accosted at the Capitol tonight by a pro-trns man. One new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm and it’ll heal just fine. The Capitol police arrested the guy. Your trns violence and threats on my life will only make me double down. FAFO,” she wrote, urging her supporters to “Hold the Line.”

The U.S. Capitol Police confirmed the arrest and stated that a member of Congress reported an incident just before 6 p.m. in the Rayburn House Office Building. Officers and agents with the Threat Assessment Section quickly identified and apprehended the suspect.

The assailant has been identified as 33-year-old James McIntyre of Illinois. He faces charges of assaulting a government official, a serious offense that carries significant legal consequences.

Mace, known for her conservative stances on social and gender-related issues, has previously been the target of threats and intimidation. This incident is the latest in a series of confrontations faced by lawmakers amid rising political tensions.

“This type of violence only strengthens my resolve,” Mace stated. “I will not be intimidated.”

The assault highlights ongoing concerns about political discourse in the country and the safety of elected officials. Capitol Police continue to investigate the incident and are working to ensure the security of members of Congress.
