A powerful explosion in The Hague early Saturday morning caused a building to partially collapse, killing at least three individuals and sending multiple victims to the hospital. Authorities are investigating the incident, but no confirmation has been made regarding potential links to terrorism.
Police have reported that a car was seen speeding away from the site of the explosion in the Tarwekamp area at approximately 6:15 a.m. They have urged witnesses to come forward and asked the public to submit any footage of the explosion or its aftermath to assist in the investigation.
Thus far, at least four victims have been transported to the hospital, while rescue teams continue searching in the rubble. The affected building housed apartments above a bridal fashion store located on the ground floor.
The mayor said rescuers were no longer looking for survivors but for eventual bodies, given that the ‘’slim chance of survival’’ under what’s left of the apartments.
In a statement, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima expressed their condolences: “Our thoughts are with those affected in The Hague after the explosion and fire this morning. We sympathize with all those who have been personally affected or who fear for the fate of their loved ones. Our hearts go out to you and to the emergency services who are fully committed to the rescue work.”
Populist leader Geert Wilders, a key figure in the Dutch government, also commented: “Terrible news. Lots of strength to everyone, and I think of the victims. Also strength and thanks to all emergency services!”
