Former New York Gov. Assaulted During Evening Walk in Manhattan

Former Democratic New York Governor David Paterson and his stepson, Anthony Sliwa, were assaulted by a group of five individuals during an evening walk on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

The 70-year-old former governor, who is legally blind, and his 20-year-old stepson sustained minor injuries in the attack. The New York Police Department has labeled the incident a “gang assault” and is asking the public for information.

The altercation began when Sliwa, the son of Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, confronted some of the attackers who were climbing a building’s fire escape.

Later, as Paterson and Sliwa were walking together, the group confronted them again near East 97th Street, leading to a physical altercation. Paterson said his stepson fought off multiple attackers, though he suffered a cut to the face that required stitches.

Paterson and Sliwa were treated for minor injuries and released from a nearby hospital. A spokesperson for Paterson, Sean Darcy, said the former governor and his family are “thankful for the quick response time from the police and the outpouring of support.”

Paterson’s primary focus, Darcy added, was on the New York Mets’ playoff game, showing his resolve even after such a violent event.

This disturbing attack highlights ongoing concerns about safety in New York City, a topic of significant public discussion as crime and lawlessness continue to rise.
