Vance Says Trump Would Veto National Abortion Ban

Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) announced that if reelected, Donald Trump would veto a national ban on abortion.

“I think he would. He said that explicitly that he would,” Vance said on NBC News’ Meet the Press.

“Can you commit, Senator, sitting right here with me today that if you and Donald Trump are elected, that you will not impose a federal ban on abortion?” Kristen Welker asked.

“I can absolutely commit that, Kristen,” Vance said. “Donald Trump has been as clear about that as possible.”

“If California wants to have a different abortion policy from Ohio, then Ohio has to respect California, and California has to respect Ohio,” he explained. “Donald Trump’s view is that we want the individual states and their individual cultures and their unique political sensibilities to make these decisions because we don’t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue.”

In April, Trump said that his view on abortion is that “the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both. And whatever they decide must be the law of the land — in this case, the law of the state.”

“Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks, or some will have more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be,” he explained. “At the end of the day, it’s all about the will of the people.”

Many Republicans have shifted from calling for a federal abortion ban to declaring that states have the right to decide the matter.

“We proudly stand for families and Life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied Life or Liberty without Due Process, and that the States are, therefore, free to pass Laws protecting those Rights,” a GOP platform document says.
