Bipartisan Lawmakers Introduce Resolution Honoring Corey Comperatore

Two lawmakers, Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), have introduced a resolution to honor the man killed during the July 13 Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania, Corey Comperatore.

The resolution, HR 1360, honors “former fire department chief Corey Comperatore who was killed while shielding his family during the attempted assassination of the former President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump.”

It declares that Comperatore “died a hero to his family and hero to his country for his service.”

The resolution also calls for the U.S. government to “condemn the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump” and condemn “political violence in all its forms.”

“Corey Comperatore should not have lost his life exercising his First Amendment right by going to a political rally. There is no place for political violence in America! Corey’s selfless and courageous actions exemplify the highest standards of bravery and devotion to both his family and his country,” Gaetz said in a statement. “This resolution seeks to commemorate his extraordinary bravery and unwavering commitment to public service after he heroically sacrificed his life while shielding his family from gunfire intended for President Trump.”

Moskowitz declared that Comperatore “led his life keeping his community safe and spent the last moments of his life shielding his family from danger. No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, those are the brave qualities we should all salute. He deserved the ability to go to a political rally and return home. I hope that my colleagues will join us in honoring his sacrifice,” said Congressman Moskowitz.

Donald Trump urged Americans in a post on Truth Social to “hold in [their] hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngin (R) issued an order to fly the American and Virginian flags at half-mast in honor of Comperatore.

“In accordance with the authority vested in me as Governor, I hereby order that the flags of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Virginia be flown at half-staff on all state and local buildings and grounds in the Commonwealth of Virginia in memory and respect of former Pennsylvania Volunteer Firefighter Chief Corey Comperatore, who tragically lost his life shielding his family on July 13, 2024 in Butler County at a rally for former President Trump,” Youngkin stated in his order.

“Virginia stands in solidarity with and extends prayers to all Pennsylvanians, especially those who remain in critical condition and their families,” he added. Under his order, “flags shall be lowered at Noon on Monday, July 15, 2024 and remain at half-staff until sunset July 16, 2024.”
