The Biden administration is looking to bring Palestinian refugees to the United States in order to give them a “permanent safe haven,” according to a report from CBS News.
There are two proposals for the endeavor. One uses the “United States Refugee Admissions Program to welcome Palestinians with U.S. ties who have managed to escape Gaza and enter neighboring Egypt” while another will allow Palestinians to be processed if they “have American relatives,” the report explained.
Those who pass eligibility, medical, and security measures would qualify to be flown to the United States as a refugees. This process provides “permanent residency, resettlement benefits like housing assistance and a path to American citizenship.”
Palestinians may claim they are being persecuted to qualify for refugee status.
According to the State Department, Biden “affirmed the United States’ commitment to welcoming refugees by maintaining the total admissions ceiling in FY 2024 Presidential Determinations on Refugee Admissions (PD 2023-13) at 125,000, the same target President Biden established since FY 2022 and the highest target in several decades.”
“His decision reflects the United States’ long-standing leadership on refugee resettlement in the face of an unprecedented global displacement crisis as record numbers of people around the world have been forced to flee war, persecution, and instability.”
A White House spokesperson told CBS News that the United States “rejects any actions leading to the forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank or the redrawing of the borders of Gaza,” adding, “The best path forward is to achieve a sustainable cease-fire through a hostage deal that will stabilize the situation and pave the way to a two-state solution.”
