According to data from the Social Security Administration (SSA), almost two million people have registered to vote without a photo ID.
Texas had 1,250,710 registrations, Pennsylvania had 580,513, and Arizona recorded 220,731.
The data is connected to the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA), which allows individuals to register to vote using the last four digits of their Social Security Number (SSN).
“To comply with the requirements of section 303 of HAVA, SSA developed a new verification system, known as the Help America Vote Verification (HAVV) system, in August 2004,” the SSA website explains. “States must only submit a request to us for new voters who do not present a valid driver’s license during the voter registration process. HAVV verifies the accuracy of the name, date of birth, and last four digits of SSN submitted and sends an indication of whether our records show the individual as deceased.”
Illegal immigrants are able to obtain SSNs through work permits, leaving many Americans concerned that non-citizens may participate in elections.
“Generally, only noncitizens authorized to work in the United States by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can get an SSN,” reads a document from the SSA. “SSNs are used to report a person’s wages to the government and to determine that person’s eligibility for Social Security benefits. You need an SSN to work, collect Social Security benefits, and receive other government services.”
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) expressed concerns over the matter on X, writing, “Are migrants registering to vote using SSN? We need photo ID with proof of citizenship requirements!”
“There are Senate races in AZ, PA, and TX as well as House races and the 2024 presidential,” she continued. “AZ and PA are swing states but D’s would love to take Texas. Cruz only beat Beto by just over 200,000 votes in 2018, and Trump beat Biden in 2020 by just over 630,000 votes, but adding 1,250,710 illegal voters will flip TX blue. And Texas has 40 electoral college votes.”
Others noted that the “system doesn’t seem to indicate if there were multiple transactions for the same person.”
