The University of California, San Diego announced that undergraduate students will be required to complete a one-quarter course about climate change.
“The establishment of this new graduation requirement for incoming first-year students, beginning fall 2024, is designed to empower our students with the knowledge and skills needed to confront the urgent global challenge of climate change,” reads the announcement.
According to the announcement, the development “does not increase the number of courses required for graduation,” as the climate change education requirement “will overlap with general education or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) courses, as well as courses that apply to major and minor requirements.”
UC San Diego is one of the first universities to require climate change studies to graduate.
According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, the climate change requirement is likely designed to “soften the skepticism of doubters.”
