Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a not guilty plea in the Georgia indictment over allegations linked to his endeavors to overturn the 2020 election results.
The Fulton County Superior Court received a statement from Trump that read, “As evidenced by my signature below, I do hereby waive formal arraignment and enter my plea of NOT GUILTY to the Indictment in this case,” Reuters reports.
This plea negates the need for Trump to make a personal court appearance next week regarding the matter.
Trump, currently leading the pack for the Republican nomination in the 2024 election race, faces allegations involving 13 felony counts in Georgia, Reuters notes.
Among these are charges of racketeering and accusations of exerting pressure on state authorities to reverse his 2020 electoral defeat.
Additionally, he is implicated in setting up an unverified group of electors to challenge Congress’s acknowledgment of President Joe Biden’s win.
The extensive 98-page indictment, unveiled this past August, lists 41 criminal charges against Trump and 18 additional defendants.
Notably, some of the co-defendants, including lawyer Sidney Powell and associates Trevian Kutti and Ray Smith, have similarly chosen to forego formal arraignment, entering not guilty pleas.
