House Democrats have reintroduced legislation that would call for a 1000% excise tax on “semiautomatic assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines.
Virginia Democrat Don Beyer reintroduced the legislation.
He originally introduced the bill last year with 41 cosponsors.
At the time, he said, “It is essential that Congress take meaningful action to prevent gun violence, and the bill I am putting forward can cut through the gridlock and get it done.”
An AR-15 often costs between $400 and $2,000.
The tax proposal would result in prices ranging between $4,000 and $20,000.
Reporting from Just the News:
Beyer's previous bill proposed taxing magazines that can accept more than 10 rounds of ammunition. This would have affected many standard semiautomatic pistols, such as Glock 19s.
