Scientists are investigating whether or not “cocaine sharks” are actually taking in illegal drugs in Florida waters.
According to officials, drug dealers dump illegal narcotics off boats and into the ocean as they are about to get caught smuggling.
The researchers are now conducting experiments in Florida to determine if cocaine sharks are of concern.
Through their investigation, the scientists dropped dummy bales the same size as cocaine bales filled with fish powder to determine if the sharks went for the bait.
“A hammerhead, a species that would usually swim away from humans, came directly towards the divers, moving erratically,” The Guardian reported. “They also observed a sandbar shark swimming in circles as it focused on an imaginary object.”
From The Blaze:
Marine biologist Tom "The Blowfish" Hird and University of Florida environmental scientist Tracy Fanara conducted experiments in Florida to see if cocaine sharks are a possible concern. The research team filmed their experiments for the "Cocaine Sharks" documentary airing on Discovery's upcoming "Shark Week" programming.
