QUICK FACTS:
- A new poll has revealed former President Donald Trump has strengthened his lead in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
- This comes following the Department of Justice’s case accusing him of allegedly mishandling classified documents.
- According to a CBS News poll, the former president had 61% support in the Republican primary, beating his opponent, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, by 38 points.
- Republican South Carolina Senator Tim Scott fell in third place with just 4% of support, with former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Hayley trailing just behind at 3%.
DONALD TRUMP’S ATTORNEY ALINA HABBA ON TARGETING THE FORMER PRESIDENT:
“When your name is Donald Trump, when you’re leading in the polls, you are going to get hit hard. You are going to get indicted until you can’t take it anymore. But they picked the wrong guy,” Habba said.
BACKGROUND:
- Trump promised over the weekend that he will “never” drop out of the 2024 presidential race even if he is convicted on any of the criminal charges that he is up against.
- “I’ll never leave,” Trump told POLITICO. “Look, if I would have left, I would have left prior to the original race in 2016. That was a rough one. In theory that was not doable.”
- Trump said that he does not think he will be convicted on the charges and does not plan on taking a plea deal.
- While the trial has no start date, the case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who Trump appointed to the Southern District of Florida bench in 2020.
- “Hard to believe that the leading candidate, by far, of the opposition party, got indicted. This is strictly Third World. MAGA!,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
