A recent CBS News/YouGov poll found that 65% of Republicans believe it is important for the GOP to demonstrate loyalty to former President Donald Trump, with 35% stating that it is very important and 30% saying it is somewhat important, The Washington Times reports.
In contrast, only 14% of respondents said loyalty to Trump is not important at all.
The poll also revealed that 80% of Republicans prefer candidates whose policies and proposals align with Trump’s, while two-thirds want them to share his views on the 2020 election.
As half of Republicans said they would like GOP candidates to emulate Trump’s behavior, the poll suggests that the former president still wields significant influence within the party.
The poll also found that a majority of Republicans believe that investigating President Biden should be a high priority for the new Congress.
However, this sentiment was not shared by all Republicans, with the poll dividing respondents into those who identified as MAGA Republicans (aligned with Trump’s movement) and non-MAGA Republicans.
Among MAGA Republicans, 72% said that investigating Biden is a high priority, compared to 47% of non-MAGA Republicans.
Overall, the poll showed that among all voters, 76% said that lowering inflation should be Congress’ top priority, 71% cited “protecting Social Security/Medicare” as a priority, and 63% pointed to crime reduction.
The poll was conducted between January 4th and 6th, and included a sample of 2,144 U.S. adults.
The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
